TA was a refuge for around 300 people who had lived far and near Telok Ayer Street to take cover in the church whenever air-raid sirens sounded off during WWII. It was also a medical post and housed from 1925, a child welfare centre to reach out to mothers, children and babies.
1. Application for Relief Form (1942-45)
This form was issued by the Syonan Relief Society during the Japanese Occupation, allowing civilians to request essential aid in a time of scarcity.
2. TA Member Certificate (1942-45)
Distributed to church members, this certificate granted free access to Telok Ayer Chinese Methodist Church (TA) and also served as identification during Japanese military checks.
3. Kindergarten Expenses & Letter-Writing Supplies
(1940s)
Despite wartime hardships, the church continued operating its kindergarten. Stationery for writing home letters to China were also procured.
4. First Aid Party Helmet (WWII)
Worn by a volunteer from overseas forces during air raids, this helmet symbolizes TA’s role as a refuge.
5. Overseas Chinese Association Constitution (1942)
Distributed through the church, this document outlined the rules of the association.
6. Meeting Notice from Overseas Chinese Association
(1943)
This handwritten note dated 3 July 1943 (昭和十七年) summoned Chinese leaders to welcome Japanese officials at City Hall on 4 July 1943.
