1. Evangelistic Plays: A Tradition of Faith and Community(1948–1960)
Performances were a cherished tradition since the first play, “Light of the World” 世界之光 (1926) offered spiritual enrichment and community connection when paid entertainment was a luxury few could afford.
2. Fundraising Performance (Late 1930s)
This photograph captures a fundraising performance by Protestant Chinese Methodists who fled China during the upheaval of 1927, when the National Army’s Northern Expedition reached the Yangtze River Basin. In the late 1930s, together they staged “中国不会倒” (China Will Not Fall) at Victoria Memorial Hall—a powerful play raising funds andawareness, embodying resilience and unity in challenging times.
3. This photograph features the first cast (1937) of a locally written play by a member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service (WSCS).
